VSM safety objectives are to
prevent personnel injury or loss of life. to prevent health injury. to prevent damage to
ship,cargo,property and environment. to prevent harbor and sea pollution. to provide safe
practices in ship operation. to provide safe working environments. to establish safeguards
against all identifiable risks. to continuously improve Safety Management skills of
personnel ashore and onboard. to prepare for emergencies, related both to safety and
environment protection. to comply with Mandatory Rules and Regulations. to ensure that
applicable codes, guidelines and standards recommended by the Organization,
Administrations, Classification Societies and Maritime Industry Organizations are met
with. to maintain the condition of ship and its equipment. The
following aspects and functions are to be part of VSM Safety Management System [SMS]
Defined
safety responsibility both ashore and on board. Preventive measures to avoid and reduce
risks,accidents. Improving qualifications and experience of personnel through Skill,
knowledge and training. Motivation of all employees. Safety drills. Defined safety
procedures and instructions. Contingency plans and training. Adherence to National and
International safety regulations. Use of relevant protective, rescue and emergency
equipment. Defined communication lines and procedures. Reporting and handling of accidents
and near accidents to the Safety committee. Implementing improved plans based on
